COLLBORATON FOR COMMUNITY

SISU is a Finnish word which captures the idea of one's ability to keep fighting against all odds when others have given up. It's with the spirit of Sisu that we want to hold up and honor all of the Cook County residents who have put their grit, bravery, tenacity of purpose and resilience forward to carve out a life of their own on our rugged North Shore.

$10 from each bag of this special coffee blend sold will be used to support the livelihoods and everyday needs of our local community. Our goal is to raise $30,000 to put toward this effort.

The faces behind the project

I'm always looking for creative ways to positively affect the community that we call home, when this opportunity presented itself, I was super excited to collaborate with Sarah and Hannah on this project. This project fits right into Fika Coffee's "drivers" of community, coffee and adventure. I believe that the economic implications of this project, however small, will be mighty. With the majority of the money raised through this project staying right here in Cook County, I hope that it will be a catalyst for other creative endeavors for our community as we take ownership and continue to write the narrative that we want to see for our community.

Optimist. I believe in the goodness of people and always see the bright side of a situation. This optimism translates to our community as well. I fully believe in this place and its people. My family has experienced tragedy first hand with the death of my brother in 2011 and the people of Cook County showed up, and continue to show up each and every day. When the tragedies of this Spring occurred, I knew we needed to do SOMETHING. Collaborating with Josh and Hannah was such a natural choice. While some may see Fika and Java Moose as competitors, we believe collaboration over competition will always prevail. This community has been so good to us, it is our turn to step up for the greater Cook County community and its people. Thank you for helping us support our cause.

I know I’m not alone when I say 2020 has been a challenging year. COVID-19, the struggle for equality and local community events have heightened my awareness of the needs in this world and in our local community that are going unmet. No matter who we are or where we are in life, challenging times inevitably arise. My hope is that the Sisu project will offer an opportunity to pay forward the generosity of others, especially in this community, that have touched my life. I hope it is a way to spread a smile or simply let someone know they are seen and cared for, even in the dark valleys of life.
